The ongoing criminal prosecution of journalist and YouTube creator Aidan "Turtleboy" Kearney in Massachusetts should deeply alarm every journalist and citizen who values the First Amendment. Kearney faces charges carrying over 100 combined years in prison primarily for his relentless, confrontational investigative reporting on the high-profile Karen Read murder trial.

A group of content creators and independent researchers within the grassroots "Free Karen Read" movement recently conducted an extensive review of Kearney’s public broadcasts and guest appearances. Their analysis of the full, unedited context of these videos reveals no criminal intent to intimidate witnesses. Instead, they demonstrate a clear, consistent intent to expose systemic police corruption and a profound miscarriage of justice.

When the state uses criminal witness intimidation and conspiracy statutes to lock up a blogger for aggressive public reporting and opinion journalism, it establishes a catastrophic precedent. The Founding Fathers purposefully made the First Amendment first because a free society cannot function without a free press. If the government can criminalize Kearney's speech under the guise of "intimidation," no independent journalist or vocal citizen is safe from prosecution.

The mainstream media’s silence on this massive threat to constitutional liberties is baffling. It is time for journalists nationwide to speak up about the unjust persecution of a person for asking questions. Journalism is not a crime. Turtleboy was right.
